Italian Film

Welcome, Benvenuti to the 2014 Italian Film festival

The 19th New Zealand Italian Film festival event continues the festival’s tradition of bringing you the best of contemporary Italian cinema. The lineup includes many genres, particularly concentrated on those that appeal to the majority of you, and that the Italians are expert at: comedy, romantic comedy and drama.

The selection covers most of the winners of the Italian film industry’s Oscars, the David di Donatello awards. From the multi award winning ‘Long Live Freedom’, showcasing Toni Servillo’s exceptional talents, through ‘Honey’, a powerful first feature from celebrated actress Valeria Golino and ‘Salvo’, an exceptional noir, to the clever satirical depiction of the state of Italian politics in ‘Viva l’Italia’. All your favourite actors are represented - Sergio Castellitto, Valerio Mastandrea, Michele Placido, Raoul Bova, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, Claudia Gerini, Carolina Crescentini, Riccardo Scamarcio, Margherita Buy, Stefano Accorsi and many, many more. We are thrilled to have programmed the first festival double feature ‘Mr. Volare: The Story of Domenico Modugno Parts 1 & 2’, a tribute to the late, great Domenico Modugno, a filmic event by itself.

So now it is for you to spend time perusing the film selection, coupled with the screening schedule, to work out how you are going to indulge your passion for Italian cinema - a tough ask with all the delights on offer this year. If you’re having trouble narrowing down your choices, my recommendation is simply to determine those periods when you can make time, and go and see the film that is screening then. I am certain you will not be disappointed.

Viva il cinema italiano! Buon divertimento!
