2009 David Di Donatello: Best Actress & Best Song

Director Giuseppe Piccioni (‘The Life I Want’, ‘Light of My Eyes’) returns to the festival with a compelling new story of love, drama and intrigue, starring luminous international star Valeria Golino.

In true Piccioni fashion the narrative orchestrates an encounter between two people who would not normally meet, resulting in a love story with little chance of succeeding. Giulia (Golino) teaches at a swimming pool. One of her pupils is the young daughter of Guido (Valerio Mastandrea), a married and successful writer.  While his latest book has been selected as one of the five finalists for a prestigious literary prize, he grapples with feelings of futility about his profession. When they meet at the pool, the enigmatic and passionate Giulia immediately intrigues an introverted Guido, who is drawn by her grace and finesse in the water. Giulia, however, initially keeps her distance as she is harbouring a dark secret.

Golino brings great sensitivity to her role, and as an additional treat for her fans the film’s closing song by the group Baustelle features vocals by Golino, and collected the Best Song Award at the 2009 Italian Oscars.
