"Uomini, donne, bambini e cani" is about a family of two young parents, Anna and Giovanni, their five children, Vittorio, Nina, Veronica, Marco and Francesco, and their pet dogs and cats, all set in the ‘60s. Also on the scene are four grandparents and a great aunt. When they’re all together they make up a small festive, colourful, chaotic tribe. The events of family life are recounted by the adolescent Nina, a naïve but attentive young girl.
Anna (Ornella Muti), Nina’s mother, is a beautiful woman who has a spontaneous lust for life and loving temperament, but suffocates under the load of her daily chores and an argumentative relationship with her husband. Giovanni is an ambitious macho man; an overly authoritarian father, often absent, who is oblivious to the strain that Anna endures. Anna’s unhappiness about her situation grows, but she does everything she can in the name of a dream that has never been fulfilled: to create a really truly happy family. ‘Love lies, kids and dogs’ is as much a film about conflict within generations as it is a film about the music, colour, passion and rebellion of the 60’s. There is much to laugh about as Nina recounts the events that keep on bringing the family back together throughout her teenage years. |
