We can spend many years of our life with people dear to us without ever truly knowing them. However convinced we may be of having understood everything they feel there will always be smaller and greater secrets that we never manage to discover. Gianni Orzan (Sergio Rubini) is forty years old and an acclaimed writer of children’s books. He is married and has a son of eight. When his father dies suddenly, Gianni believes he can finally leave the past behind.

‘Then an intriguing figure steps out of the past to reveal a shocking secret to Gianni and his comfortable world is shattered by this disturbing revelation. The shadowy and armed stranger (Bruno Ganz) is suspiciously too well informed about all the details of Gianni's own past, particularly about his father, to be ignored. The devastated hero is kept on a razor's edge of suspense and doubt sown by his relentless tormenter "of a thousand identities and unknown country" when the maddening game of truth and lies suddenly takes a bitter twist. Gianni’s secure life is undermined not only by the lies of the past but also betrayal of the present and he faces the truth for the first time. A passionate journey that challenges the nature of acceptance and forgiveness.

From the novel of the same name by Sandro Veronesi.

“An unforgettable Bruno Ganz is the center, the light, the mystery in ‘Truth and lies’” La Stampa
