On 20th March 1994, Rai TV news reporter Ilaria Alpi and her cameraman Miran Hrovatin were murdered in an ambush in Mogadishu. ‘The cruelest day’ traces what happened to the two through a maze of plot twists that contain all the rhythm and gripping tension of the best spy stories. But there is one point the viewer should keep in mind. No part of this story is fiction.

Not the deaths and the traffickers, not the investigations nor the enormous sums of money involved in the case. And certainly not the hellish international scenario that swallowed up two journalists whose investigative reporting brought them very close - too close - to the truth of a story they were not supposed to know. One of the largest government corruption scandals in European history.

Giovanna Mezzogiorno (Facing windows, Last kiss) delivers a brilliant and harrowing performance as Ilaria Alpi and ensures that ‘The cruelest day’ is never less than fascinating viewing.
