A significant event running in conjunction to the film festival this year is the photography exhibition:
'Philippe Antonello: Cinema! (1993-2007)'
The exhibition is a fabulous collection of on and off set photographs from a range of Italian and international films, including: All the Invisible Children; A casa nostra; The caiman; Don't Tell; Crime novel; Agata and the storm; The Passion of Christ; My House in Umbria; The Life Aquatic; I'm not scared; Burning in the Wind and Bread & Tulips.
Philippe Antonello was born in Geneva in 1968 and has been a professional set photographer since 1993; his cinematic career begining on the set of acclaimed Italian filmmaker Silvio Soldini. Sought after in Italy by most major directors (Silvio Soldini, Ermanno Olmi, Nanni Moretti, Gabriele Salvatores, and Cristina Comencini), Antonello has also gained an international reputation working on the sets of renowned directors Mel Gibson, Spike Lee, Ridley Scott, Wes Anderson, Emir Kusturica and Franco Zeffirelli. He has won numerous awards for his photographs both in Italy and internationally as well as having published several photography books. Most recently, Antonello's photographs have been on display at the Trastavere Museum in Rome as part of an innovative photographic exhibit that displays photographs of the great set photographers of the world of cinema.
Describing his photographs Antonello has declared: "I have tried to create a sort of reportage of the the films in order to convey the creativity behind them, the emotions and the ideas involved in the cinematic journey. My photos, therefore talk about the films and their directors and I hope that they succeed in conveying a valuable artistic and cultural message."
Philippe Antonello will be in Auckland as a recipient of a University of Auckland Hood Fellowship. The photography exhibition has been brought to New Zealand by DHL Global Forwarding.
The national opening of the exhibition is at Auckland University's Gus Fisher Gallery on the 28th September 2007. From the opening night of the film festival a selection of the photographs will be on display in the foyer of the cinema, in each city.
